10 New Family Traditions to Start This Thanksgiving

November 12 , 2019

The same old turkey dinner may be getting a little tedious on Thanksgiving. Maybe you are sick of going to the same places or doing the same routine. Perhaps, family members have moved away or you can’t handle all of the cooking on your own. The food may not be your favorite (who actually likes stuffing anyway!?) and the kids are off from school for a long weekend. Maybe it’s time to try some new family traditions to make Thanksgiving extra special for you and your family.

Let the Kids Help

Give the kids one dish to make own their own or help you along in the kitchen while you prepare the giant feast for you and your family.

Change Up the Food

Don’t like turkey, stuffing or cranberry sauce? No problem! You don’t have to stick to the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Try different dishes every year to switch it up and make things exciting!

Give Thanks

Have everyone in the family make a list of things they are thankful for and share it around the dinner table before or after mealtime.

Dress Up in Costumes

Who said Halloween was the only holiday with costumes? Grab your feathered hat or waistcoat and play a little dress up to make the holiday more festive.

Take a Trip Somewhere New

Hop in your RV camper or rent an RV for Thanksgiving to take a camping adventure or a scenic drive with your family. Nothing gets the family altogether like being inside of close quarters for the holiday.

Create a Cornucopia

Nothing says the fall season and the Thanksgiving holiday like a homemade cornucopia. Get together, get crafty and make a cornucopia centerpiece for the dinner table.

Watch a Favorite Movie

Is there a specific movie that the whole family enjoys? Play this movie every year after dinner to digest the feast while your eyes are glued to the screen.

Play a Board Game

Get the family interacting before dessert time with a board game that everyone can play.

Give Gifts You Make

Giving is all apart of thankfulness. The company of family is a gift all its own, but who wouldn’t want something handmade from someone they love? Make it similar to the tradition of secret santa and choose from a hat who you will be making a gift for a few months before the holiday.  It gets everyone creative, crafty and thankful.

Go Camping

Camping is the best way to say thanks, to you, to your family, and to nature. Camping is a bonding experience and gives you all a chance to spend quality time together away from the buzzing of everyday life. You may not be able to bake a whole turkey over a campfire, but you can roast a couple of turkey legs if you want to get into the spirit!

Starting new traditions within a traditional holiday may take some time, but it is worth it! Weave the fabric of your imagination into a holiday we have come to know and to love.
